MUSCAT: The Public Services Regulatory Authority (APSR) has introduced temporary reductions in residential electricity tariffs to ease the impact of higher consumption during the summer months. The measures apply to a single basic account from May through August 2026 and are aimed at supporting households during periods of peak demand driven by high temperatures.
Under the revised tariff structure, a 15 per cent discount will apply in May for consumption between 0 and 4,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh), 10 per cent for usage between 4,001 and 6,000 kWh; and 5 per cent for consumption exceeding 6,000 kWh. The discounts increase during June, July and August, reaching 20 per cent, 15 per cent and 10 per cent respectively across the same usage bands.
The authority has also directed licensed companies not to disconnect electricity services during this period and to provide flexible payment arrangements for customers with outstanding balances, allowing instalment-based settlements.
These measures are intended to mitigate financial pressure on consumers while ensuring continuity of service. The regulator stressed the need for licensed providers to comply fully with the framework to maintain accurate billing and consumption monitoring. — ONA
